I’ve always had mixed feelings about this woman and her story. However last Sunday in Dallas as I sat opposite newcomer to the VoIP scene Jay Phillips I felt for the first time a connection with her. A quote from the start of her book will make sense of this connection. “I’m an old woman now with one foot in the grave and the other on the side ready to slip” (purists please excuse the liberal translation from the native Irish). Indeed I felt old, across from me was a freshman who will no doubt leave his mark on the rapidly changing world of telephony, he is already working with leaders in the field like Mark Spencer of Asterisk and Digium fame. His framework for developing voice applications (Adhearsion) opens the power of Asterisk to those many souls who tried valiantly but failed to conquer Asterisk’s legendary conf files.

Why is this important? Its simple really … spending less time learning VoIP platforms configuration and more time figuring out what services consumers will use and pay for is crucial for anyone looking to generate revenue from emerging disruptive technologies.

So why was I spending time in the company of Mr Phillips? (Other than to make myself feel like an underachiever as at his stage in life I was fully focused on spending as much time as possible in Ma Hartigan’s* charming company.) My interest in the area is in what will happen when these disruptive technologies emerge on mobile networks, IMS being the catalyst to open the mobile domain to technologies like VoIP and IM. More specifically several colleagues and I are in the process of commercialising products that have emerged from research that the TSSG carried out in the area of next generation communications. Through IMS Stream I’m marketing a complete SIP based communications framework. This framework corresponds to an implementation of the IMS SCIM and will hopefully allow us to benefit from the opportunity created as mobile service providers deploy IMS networks enabling more advanced services. But there will be more about that in later posts, right now as I pull into Waterford’s train station its time to hit the sack and recover from the class A jet lag that has kicked in…… :)

*Ma Hartigan was a proprietor of a well known Dublin watering hole particularly popular with UCD engineers.
